Snus information – history, ingredients, health aspects, brands & types

History

Swedish (that's from Sweden, not swiss snus!) snus (a smokeless tobacco product) originally came from the New World, where the first colonialists first discovered the benefits of tobacco. The very first type was snuff, which was inhaled through the nose, just like our present-day counterpart. It is thought that the South American Indians mainly used this tobacco based variant in religious rites. It then spread across Europe during the 16th century and really picked up steam after Jean Nicot was reported to have cured the French Queen’s headache by advising her to use tobacco based snuff. Nicot then had tobacco named after him (Nicotiana in Latin) by our very own Linné.

During the 18th century, chewing tobacco was somewhat more common among the general public but this was relatively expensive so many started to use the moist ‘snus’ as a substitute. It was at the beginning of the 19th century that the first types of what is now called Swedish Snus began to be produced. Several of the types that were introduced then are still available on the market.

Production & Ingredients

Snus consists mainly of tobacco, water, various salts and a range of aromatic agents. The demands placed on snus are the same as for other foodstuffs - in order to guarantee quality and freshness. The tobacco used is of the air-dried variety and basically comes form all over the world. Water is added for moisture and salt for taste and increased shelf life. Finally, aromatic agents are added to distinguish the flavour of the snus.

The production process is relatively simple. The tobacco is first dried, after which it is ground into varying degrees of coarseness depending on what type of snus is being produced. Then it is processed by adding water and salt while stirring and heating it. Finally, the snus is packed into traditional tins and is ready for consumption. Snus should always be kept chilled to retain its flavour and freshness.

Snus Types & Usage

There are two different types of snus – loose snus (also called kramsnus (wet snus)) and portion snus. Loose snus is applied under the lip after having shaped a so-called ‘pinch’ using your fingers. The consistency of the snus (coarse, medium or fine) determines how easy this so-called ‘baking’ of the snus is. Loose snus is very similar to the American dip tobacco in many ways, however snus is considered much healthier (much lower TNSA levels, Tobacco Specific Nitrosamines) and a lot 'classier' (no spitting).

Portion snus is packed into small bags made of the same fibres as teabags. The size of portion snus varies depending on brand and type but is generally around 20-25 grams. Portion snoose has become more popular than the traditional loose snus in recent years and is now the type that is sold the most.

Is snus harmful?

The impact of snus on the human body is a much-debated topic. The only thing there seems to be any consensus on is that snus is definitely less harmful than smoking. The researchers are in agreement about this. The major issue is, and will probably continue to be for quite some time, whether snus causes various forms of cancer and whether there is a risk of people that would otherwise never have begun smoking starting to use snus instead as this is considered ‘harmless.’ Some of the research findings in the field are presented below.

Snus research

The studies that do exist in the field have concluded that the negative effects of using snus are increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, a somewhat increased risk of diabetes and, in many cases, a hole in the wallet (please visit Northerner snus for a cure for the latter).

There does not, however, seem to be any direct connection between snus and cancer. For quite some time, the public opinion has been that everything to do with tobacco causes cancer (snus can blame cigarettes for this…) but a large number of studies show that this is not the case. Those using snus do not run any greater risk of suffering from oral cancer, throat cancer or stomach cancer than others. For example, the report ‘The Swedish Experience,’ shows that even though Sweden has a similar rate of tobacco consumptions as the rest of Europe, mortality for tobacco related illnesses is significantly lower. This is because so many people use snus rather than smoking.

Research results

A proven effect of snus is that the gums recede. This is not reversible and the gums do thus not grow back when you stop using snus. But snus does not cause loosening of teeth. Damage to the mucous membranes in the mouth may occur and the effect of the damage is proportionate to the rate of use and the strength of the snus.

Using snus does not increase the risk of contracting any form of cancer (snus can even have a positive effect with regard to skin cancer).

Using snus does not increase the risk of gastric ulcers or other gastric and intestinal illnesses (in terms of statistics, snus has an alleviating effect on heartburn).

Using snus increases the chances of having a raised blood pressure, but there is no connection between using snus and heart attacks.

Research shows that using snus can increase the levels of insulin and thus also the risk of diabetes, but there is some uncertainty regarding this study as three other studies do not indicate any connection.

Using snus when pregnant increases the risk of premature birth, and also the risk of reduced weight at birth.

Snus manufacturers

Behind giants such as Swedish Match and JTI there is an abundance of different manufacturers of snus, some of which are described below.

Swedish Match

Swedish Match is a world leader in what we call ‘Swedish snus,’ which is moist snus applied under the lip (not to be confused with chewing tobacco, which is also moist). The company produces and markets well-known brands such as General, Ettan, Grovsnus, Catch, Göteborgs Rapé, Kronan, Probe, Tre Ankare, Röda Lacket and others. Swedish Match also sells cigars, cigarillos, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, nicotine free products and matches. Turnover in 2008 was just under SEK 13 billion, with an operating profit of over SEK 3 billion.

Camel Snus (JTI)

Camel Snus is owned by JTI (Japan Tobacco International) on an international level (not including the rights to the brand in the USA), which had a turnover of approx. SEK 542 billion in the split financial year 2008-2009 (operating profit SEK 29 billion). Camel Original is one of the most sold types of snus in the world today.

XQS

A smaller Swedish company selling tobacco-based and nicotine free snus products.

FL Snus

Fiedler & Lundgren is a medium-sized manufacturer, which markets and sells several popular types of snus such as Granit and Lucky Strike. Turnover in 2008 was approx. SEK 65 million.

Skruf

Originally a Swedish tobacco manufacturer but now in the hands of the British giant, Imperial Tobacco Group. The brand names Skruf and Knox are especially popular and Skruf had sales in Sweden of almost SEK 90 million in 2007.

Gotlandssnus

A small manufacturer with its head office on the Swedish island of Gotland. It has as a small but loyal clientele who are very devoted to the brand.

Rebel Tobacco (Elixyr)

Rebel Tobacco market and sell Elixyr, which is a snus brand as well as a cigarette brand. Rebel Tobacco had a turnover of SEK 21.5 million in 2007.

Gustavus (JTI)

Originally a Swedish Snus, which was manufactured in Vårgårda. It was then acquired by Gallaher, which in turn was taken over by JTI (see above), the present owners.

Skoal

Sold by the USA-based U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company. Copenhagen and Skoal are the company’s leading brands with other brand names such as Rooster, Red Seal and Husky also forming part of the corporate group’s offerings.

Philip Morris

The corporate tobacco giant Philip Morris sells its ‘Swedish’ snus under the brand name 1847.

Gellivaresnus

A fairly small operator based in Gällivare in Sweden. Markets and sells the brands Gellivare and Landsströms Snus.

Taboca

A Swedish snus manufacturer offering the brands Monte Cristo, Romeo y Julieta and Taboca in its product portfolio.

V2 Tobacco

A Danish manufacturer that has enjoyed great success in recent years. Produces Offroad, Phantom, Thunder and the nicotine free BaccOff Snus.

Gallaher (JTI)

A British manufacturer with brands such as Gustavus (see above) LD snus and Level. The company has now been taken over by JTI.

Swedish Match

As the largest manufacturer of snus it is no surprise that the company has the largest product range, which includes an incredible array of variants, flavours and strengths.

General

Generalsnus is Swedish Match’s largest snuss brand and a clear leader in the ‘brand league’ in Scandinavia. Its origins can be traced back to the 19th century. Twenty different types of tobacco are used in the production and the flavour is characterised by strength, spices, pepper and a hint of citrus. Today, the brand is available in the following variants: General Lös (Loose), General Portion, General Portion Maxi, General Mini, General Portion Silver, General White, General White Mini, General Sterk, General Ekstra Sterk and General Onyx.

Catch

Catch was the first flavoured snus variety to be produced. Catch comes in its own unique format called dry portion, as many of the users are women and they have somewhat different demands on their snus than is usually the case for men. Catch is currently available in Catch White Eucalyptus, Catch White Licorice, Catch Original Mini Licorice, Catch Dry White Mini Licorice, Catch Dry White Mini Eucalyptus and Catch Collection Chill.

Ettan

One of the bestselling snus brands ever and, as a matter of fact, Sweden’s oldest foodstuffs brand, with a history stretching back almost 200 years. Ettan (literally ‘the number one’) has what can be termed a ‘classic’ snus flavour and has tasted the same ever since the very first pinch was created – in other words a real classic. Ettan is today available as Ettan Lössnus, Ettan Original Portion and Ettan White Portion.

Grovsnus

A very coarsely ground snus with lots of strength and flavour. The coarse snus gives plenty of ‘feeling’ under the lip. Sold in the formats Grovsnus Lös, Grovsnus Original Portion, Grovsnus White Portion and Grovsnus Svart Portion.

Göteborgs Prima Fint

Göteborgs Prima Fint was first sold in 1919. The tobacco is finely ground and has a very mild, sweet and unseasoned flavour. Göteborgs Prima Fint is only available as loose snus.

Göteborgs Rapé

Rapé is becoming increasingly popular every year due to its fresh, sweet and slightly herbal flavour with a hint of juniper berry. Rapé is derived from the French word for ‘shredded,’ which refers to a somewhat more exclusive production method for the snus. Rapé is available as Göteborgs Rapé Lössnus, Göteborgs Rapé White Portion, Göteborgs Rapé No2 White Portion and Göteborgs Rapé White Portion Mini.

Kronan

Kronan is Swedish Match’s budget brand and is relatively new on the market. It is available as Kronan Lös, Kronan Original Portion and Kronan Vit Portion.

Nick and Johnny

A type of Snus first sold in Norway as recently as 2006. In 2007 it premiered in Sweden and quickly became a huge success. Nick and Johnny contains 40% more nicotine than regular snus and is mainly intended for smokers who have switched to snus. It is flavoured with smoke aroma and provides a very strong tobacco taste.

Onico

Onico is aimed at users who want to reduce their nicotine intake. It is completely free of both tobacco and nicotine. It is carefully flavoured with traditional snus aromas and is available as Onico Original, Onico Enbär, Onico Peppermint and Onico Mini. All of these come in the White Portion format.

Probe

Another relatively new arrival. Probe was launched in the mid-1990s and has retained its place in the product range. The tobacco flavour is mild with a distinct touch of whisky and a certain smokiness. It is available as Probe Lös and Probe Portion.

Röda Lacket

Apart from Ettan, Röda Lacket is the oldest snus brand on the market and was first sold in the mid-19th century. The most distinguishing feature of Röda Lacket (apart from the brightly coloured tin) is its texture, which resembles that of soft modelling clay somewhat. This makes it very easy to bake. The flavour has a certain hint of liquorice. It is available as Röda Lacket Lössnus, Röda Lacket Vit Portion and Claq Qui By Röda Lacket.

Tre Ankare

Tre Ankare was the first portion snus launched on the market and was first sold in the late 1970s. With a strong tobacco flavour and a real fullness it has quickly become popular with traditional ‘wet snus’ users. It is available as Tre Ankare White Portion and Tre Ankare White Portion Mini.

Rebel Tobacco

Rebel Tobacco is an independent player in the Swedish tobacco market. The company sells and markets Elixyr, Maryland and Ducal cigarettes as well as Elixyr portion snus and Elixyr Rulltobak (rolling tobacco) in Sweden.

Elixyr Original

Classic tobacco flavour from the little factory! Elixyr portion is a high quality product positioned in the budget segment of the market.

Elixyr Pepparmint

Fresh taste of peppermint! Elixyr portion is a high quality product positioned in the budget segment of the market.

Elixyr Power Energy

The energy snus! A really unique product on the Swedish market with a blend of energy drink and portion snus. Contains both caffeine and taurine while at the same time being a ‘strong’ portion with a higher nicotine content. The product has a stimulating effect and is a substitute for and supplement to energy drinks and coffee.

Granit

Granit is a well-flavoured snus with a distinct tobacco taste. It is available as Granit Maxi Portion, Granit Vit Portion, Granit Portion and Granit Lössnus.

Lucky Strike

A snus which, just like its cousin in the world of cigarettes, has a traditional flavour and comes in a stylish tin. It is available as Lucky Strike Original Portion and Lucky Strike White Portion.

Mocca

Mocca is flavoured snus in white mini-portions. It comes packed in round tins and is available in the flavours Mocca Anis (aniseed), Mocca Granatäpple (pomegranate) and Mocca Mint.

Pall Mall

Pall Mall is a tobacco-flavoured snus which is not available in shops in Sweden. It is available in the variants Pall Mall Original Portion and Pall Mall White Portion.

Retro

Retro is a snus with an ‘old-fashioned’ snuss tobacco taste, not dissimilar Ettan. It is available as Retro Portion and Retro White Portion.

Gotlandssnus

Offers two different brands available in a range of flavours and forms.

Gotlandssnus Anis

Aniseed snus was the first snus to be launched by the company. The snus has a note of mellow aniseed, which makes it charismatic with a good scent. It is available as Gotlandssnus Anis Lös and Gotlandssnus Anis Portion.

Gotlandssnus Fläder

Flädersnus (elderberry snus) is an extremely well-flavoured snus with a note of Gotland’s green vegetation. It is only available as Gotlandssnus Fläder Portion.

Gotlandssnus Original

A popular snus with classic taste. It has lots of body and a strong tobacco flavour, giving it a real feeling of Gotland. It is available as Gotlandssnus Original Lös and Gotlandssnus Original Portion.

Jakobsson’s

Jakobsson’s is a premium snus made of specially selected raw materials. A blend of the best types of tobacco collected from the four corners of the globe. Jakobsson’s even contains a type of tobacco called Alida, which is grown on Gotland. It is available as Jakobsson’s Classic (classic taste with a hint of citrus) and Jakobsson’s Ice Fruit (mellow, fruity flavour with a fresh undertone).

Jakobsson’s Nikotinfria

Jakobsson’s nicotine free is a snus-like product that consists of a blend of the finest tea varieties from Asia. It is based on green tea and carrot and also contains ginseng and fluorine. It is also available as Jakobssons Nikotinfria Classic and Jakobssons Nikotinfria Ice Fruit.

Skruf is currently one of the bestselling snoose tobacco brands in Sweden, just behind Swedish Match products.

Skruf Original

A portion snus with a clean and mild taste. It contains only natural additives of bergamot and rose oil. It is available as Skruf Original Portion and Skruf Original White Portion.

Skruf Stark

A classic, dark and coarse loose snus with a character of strong tobacco and good body. It is available as Skruf Stark Lös, Skruf Stark Portion and Skruf Stark White Portion.

Skruf Tranbär

Portion snus with a mild cranberry flavour. Made with a greater proportion of tobacco leaves than traditional snus, which makes it a bit stronger in terms of nicotine. It is available as Skruf Tranbär Portion.

V2 Tobacco

A new contender from Denmark which is gaining in popularity. Offers a solid and wide selection of snus.

Offroad Original

A snus with the flavour of tobacco, lemon and bergamot. It is available as Offroad Original Loose, Offroad Original Strong Portion, Offroad Original Portion and Offroad Original Longcut.

Offroad American Wintergreen

XQ’S Original

A fresh scent and a taste of peppermint/eucalyptus. Many of those who remember it often associate the scent with Jenka chewing gum. It provides the snus consumer with a toxin-free product and also a fresh breath. The basic ingredient is semolina (durum wheat), along with spices and sweeteners. The addition of ginseng gives extra energy. It is available as XQ’S Original Lös and XQ’S Original Mini.

XQ’S Winter

A fresh scent and a taste of peppermint/eucalyptus. Many of those who remember it associate the scent with Jenka chewing gum. XQ’S Licorice

This snus contains semolina (durum wheat), liquorice, salmiak (salty liquorice), salt and sweeteners. This gives it a mature liquorice flavour which appeals to snus users who desire a darker product than Winter that more closely resembles traditional tobacco snus. The Licorice version also has added ginseng. It is available as XQ’S Licorice Miniprilla and XQ’S Licorice Normalprilla.
