BackgroundGeneral is the real power house in the snus world. It's the best selling brand world wide (apprx 80 million cans per year are sold in Sweden alone) and it can be found on the most number of local markets. The General family of snus brands is also the largets, consisting of nine different products, all sharing the General name. It comes in Loose, Portion, Maxi Portion, Mini Portion, Silver Portion, White Portion, White Mini Portion, Strong and Extra Strong. Each adding a little to the unique flavor that is Generalsnus. Recently Swedish Match have launched a General Wintergreen Portion and a General Mini Mint Dry Portion primarily geared towards the US market. The original recipe for General is to this day a closely guarded secret, known only to a handful of people. The brand dates back to the 19th century as does many of the products marketed by Swedish Match. The name has it's origin in the fact that many of the local tobacco dealers offered a generic (or "general" as in "common") blend. One of the more popular of these blends evolved into what we these days consider the pinnalce of swedish snuss. The government controlled company "Svenska Tobaksmonopolet" (and later Swedish Match) bought the rights to General in the early years of last century and has produced it ever since. ReviewsGeneral White PortionMade by Swedish Match in Kungälv, Sweden, General White portion snus is classified as a White type portion which means that they do not put the portions thru the additional step in the manufacturing process that adds more moisture to them. While this leaves the portion material dry, the fact that Swedish Match uses the same soft material they use in all their snus and that the snus its self has more moisture in it than typical snus, makes the portions really comfortable in the lip for well over 2 hours and the flavors to release faster than other White type snus. Each can of General White contains 24, one gram portions that are shaped in the unique “Star” pattern that Swedish Match reserves for only the best snus and each portion contains 8 mg of Nicotine. The can is made of gray plastic with a plasticized label and the General logo on the lid. There is also a used portion compartment that’s concealed under the logo in the lid but, you’re here for the flavors so, let’s discuss that now! Swedish Match describes General White’s flavor as slightly peppery with hints of citrus zest and balanced tobacco notes but we feel the pepper and citrus flavors take center stage here. The peppery note comes from the blend of different tobaccos from around the world that are used in General White and the citrus is bergamot which had a lemon/grapefruit flavor. The salt also plays an important part in the flavor since it enhances the bergamot and actually aids in bringing out the flavor in the tobacco. Overall, General White portion snus is a great snus with a flavor that is truly special but, we want to know what you think! So, why not give a can of General White portion snus a try with your next order and tell us what you think by leaving a review of your own. We’ll be looking forward to reading it! General Silver PortionIntroduced by Swedish Match in 1991, General Silver portion snus is a large sized portion snus with a lower Nicotine content than most large portions. Classified as a regular type portion General Silver’s portions go thru an added step in the final part of the manufacturing process that adds a bit more moisture to each portion which aids the flavors to meld together while they’re in the can and release its flavor faster in the lip. The portion material that Swedish match uses in General Silver is the same soft material that they use in all their portion snus and is pretty comfortable for up to 2 ½ hours. Each can of General Silver has 24, one gram portions with each having 6 mg of Nicotine. The can is made of black plastic with a gray and black, plastic label. There is a used portion compartment in the lid of General Silver but, we know you’re here for the flavors so, let’s take a look! Swedish Match describes General Silver’s taste as a slightly peppery snus with hints of citrus zest and balanced tobacco notes. What we taste is an earthy, peaty tobacco flavor that indeed has a hint of black pepper. The black pepper notes are typical in most of Swedish Match’s snus and it’s due to the mix of high quality tobaccos from across the globe that they use. While the salt is there to help the Nicotine come out of the tobacco, it also helps to enhance the earthy flavor and complement the peppery taste. The citrus flavor is a very subtle note in the background and barely noticeable. If you’re looking for a snus that is lower in Nicotine yet still has the look and feel of a regular sized portion, then General Silver portion snus is for you! So, why not give a can of General Silver portion snus a try and leave a review of your own letting us know what you taste. We’ll be looking forward to reading it! General WintergreenIntroduced in 2008 and made by Swedish Match, General Wintergreen portion snus was the first Swedish snus to be created solely for the American market. Originally, General Wintergreen portion was only available in the U.S. at select tobacco shops but, due to its popularity, soon became available at online snus shops for worldwide delivery! General Wintergreen is classified as a White portion and does not go thru the additional wetting process at the end of production. Each can of General Wintergreen contains 24, one gram portions with 8 mg of Nicotine each. The material that Swedish Match uses for General Wintergreen is the same soft material they use in all their portions and is comfortable under the lip for over an hour and a half. General Wintergreen’s can made from a gray plastic with what looks like metallic flecks embedded in the plastic that gives the can the look of metal. The label is a foil and paper mix which also adds to the metal look and yes, the can does have a used portion lid in the top! Now, let’s take a look at the flavor and see why General Wintergreen was created for America. If you were to ask an American that uses smokeless tobacco, or Dip, what his/her favorite flavor was, about 50% would respond Skoal Wintergreen. Ask them why and most of them would say the strong wintergreen flavor and the burn in the lip! Swedish Match did their homework with General Wintergreen portion when it came to mimicking Skoal Wintergreen. While there are some subtle flavor differences between the two, the base wintergreen flavor and burn that’s loved by Skoal users, is present in General Wintergreen! For those that haven’t experienced a wintergreen flavored snus, imagine the flavor a wintergreen Life Saver, take away a bit of the sweetness, add a hint of mild tobacco and salt and you have the flavor of General Wintergreen. We think this snus is perfect for the American smokeless tobacco user that wants to transition to Swedish snus but, we’ll let you decide! Be sure to let us know what you think of General Wintergreen portion by leaving a review of your own. We’ll be looking forward to reading it!
