BackgroundGrovsnus is considered to be the ”roughest” and strongest of all the original swedish snus brands (the swedish word "grov" means "coarse, big, rough"). It's coarsly ground, strong in tobacco flavor and one of the purest forms of snus there is. It has its origin in the northern parts of Sweden as early as the 19th century and the typical users of Grov snus according to the marketing were miners, lumberjacks and other rough tradesmen. Much like the Marlboro Man, Grov was made for ”real” men that want to feel what they put under their lip. In time, production moved south to Stockholm were a manufacturer named Hellgren produced the first snus variant of Grovsnus that lives on to this very day. He was a fierce competitor of Fredrik Ljunglöf who produced Ettan snus and they both ended up being highly successful in the snus business. Since then, Grovsnus has evolved from being just a loose snus into Portion, White Portion, Black Portion (actually a Strong Portion) to fit the needs of the snusers of today. With few ingredients, Grovsnus Original portion still remains a popular portion snus. Each can of Grovsnus Original contains 24, one gram portions with 8 mg of Nicotine each. The material that Swedish Match uses for Grovsnus Original is the same teabag type material that they use in all their portions and stays comfortable in the lip for around two hours. The can is made of gold colored plastic with metallic flakes embedded in it that gives the can a metal look. There is a used portion compartment in the lid with the Grovsnus logo embossed on the cap but, enough about the can, let’s talk about the flavor! As we said in the beginning, Grovsnus Original was launched as a purely tobacco flavored snus and used only a few ingredients. While the list is small, the ingredients are of high quality. Hand selected tobaccos from around the world mix with water, salt and a touch of smoke flavoring. What was achieved was a snus that has a smooth flavor of tobacco with a bit of salty sweetness from the smoke flavoring. Reading that a snus has a tobacco flavor can be hard to imagine what the flavor is so, to clarify it a bit, tobacco has an earthy, leafy flavor with a leathery taste. Some people will also add that there is a mossy, peaty taste as well but even these descriptions can be a bit confusing. Imagine the scent of sitting in a pile of Fall leaves with a new Baseball glove to your nose. Grovsnus White PortionMade by Swedish Match, Grovsnus White is classified as a White type portion which means that the portions do not go thru the final step in the manufacturing process that adds a bit more moisture to them. By omitting this step, Grove White’s material remains white in color and a bit dryer than the regular types. Even though the portions of Grov White are a bit dryer, Swedish Match uses the same soft material in Grove White as they do in all their portion snus and is comfortable in the lip for about 2 hours. Each can of Grove White contains 24, one gram portions with each having 8 mg of Nicotine. While this is an accurate description, we feel that some of you may not know what a robust and well rounded tobacco product tastes like so, we’ll attempt to explain it a bit. Grov White’s flavor actually reminds us of fall. Why Fall? Simple, the tobaccos used in Grov White are a blend of tobaccos from across the globe and have an earthy, leathery taste and the scent of fall foliage. Picture a pile of raked fall leaves and a new leather jacket and that’s pretty close to the scent. The flavor is accented by salt and this adds a slight peppery flavor to the snus along with the earthy and leather elements. All of these flavors together, along with a bit of smokiness, give Grov White a well rounded flavor that really does remind us of the Fall.
